Ask The Experts: Can I Run A 1/2 Marathon In Five Weeks?

by Mario Fraioli

Mr. Fraioli,

I hate to run, but love to work out in general and think I am in pretty decent shape.  I typically only run twice a week and do either a 1.5 mile run in around 11 minutes or a 3 mile run in 24 minutes.  I have never run anything longer than an 8K in my entire life.  I have been challenged to sign up for the Rock ‘n’ Roll half marathon on September 5th and wanted to know if I had enough time (realistically) to train and get in shape for it???  Crazy that I’m considering it as I HATE to run.  But lots of my friends have done it and I am slowly becoming the only one to not have the experience and at 35 I am not getting any younger.  Would appreciate your advice if you have time to offer it.

Thanks,
Victoria M.

Running Hot: Part 1

by Training

Tawnee Prazak

Tawnee Prazak

This two-part series looks at why heat and humidity affect running performance and how to acclimatize to hot conditions.

Written by: Tawnee Prazak

It’s no secret that exercising in the heat is downright hard. Throw in humidity and it gets even worse. But why? Below are five physiological reasons the body suffers when temperatures are soaring.

1) Changes in blood flow and sweating.

The human body has the ability to cool itself in hot conditions by sweating. Actually, it’s the evaporation of sweat that causes cooling, not sweating itself. (This is important with regard to humidity.)

Star Olive Oil: A Good Fat

by Thomas Phan

borgesusa

When you think about performance nutrition for running, you might not think about olive oil – but you should. Star Olive Oil is rich in vitamin E and other antioxidants, which help prevent muscle damage during and after workouts and races. It’s also an excellent source of healthy monounsaturated fats, which promote better functioning of the cardiovascular system.

Skincare By Athletes, For Athletes

by Thomas Phan

logo_mission_skincare

MISSION Skincare™ is the official skincare system of the Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon Series

Running is hard on the skin. Sweating for hours at a time is like stewing in an acid bath. On top of that, the sun’s ultraviolet radiation cooks your skin while you log the miles. And the skincare products formulated for couch potatoes that you use to restore your skin may dry it out instead.

Workout Of The Week: Tempo Run–With A Twist!

by Mario Fraioli

C’mon baby, let’s do the twist!

Written By: Mario Fraioli

The tempo run, most easily described as a steady effort over a set distance or predetermined length of time, is a staple workout in many a runner’s training program. Whether you’re training for a fast 5K or getting ready to run your first marathon, sprinkling a tempo run or two into your training schedule will give you the most bang for your buck.

Burning Runner: Let The Weight-Loss Game Begin

by Running

By learning to cook and eat the right stuff, a 40-something year old runner making his return to the sport works to burn off at least 10 pounds in 20 weeks as he prepares for the Zappos.com Rock ‘n’ Roll Las Vegas Half Marathon.

Written by: T.J. Murphy

About one year ago I had fallen desperately out of shape. Training of any kind had been inconsistent at best, and the extra weight just piled on. I could offer up the usual excuses, but the fact is I had simply allowed my training to slip down the ladder of priorities and over time my weight climbed to 205 pounds. And for the record, it was not a lean 205 pounds. At six feet even with a medium build, the extra weight made running an unpleasantly slow experience, and memories of once being in 15-minute 5K shape (I’m in my mid-40s now so this was some time ago) didn’t hesitate to torture me with a scolding from my past self.

Tips for Summer Training

Summer is a great time to enjoy the warm weather and run outdoors.  Let’s face it, we’d much rather train during the warmer months of summer than during the frigid months of winter.  As the temperatures peak in July and August, it’s important that runners take the necessary precautions against heat related incidents.  Here are six tips for beating the heat this summer.

Racing At High Altitude

by Team Rock

By Matt Fitzgerald

One of the toughest challenges a runner can face is traveling from his or her home at low elevation to compete in a race at high altitude (above 5,000 feet). At elevations above 5,000 feet, the “thin air” factor begins to have a measurable effect on endurance performance.  At 8,000 feet, the barometric pressure is twenty-five percent lower than it is at sea level.  This means you get 25 percent less oxygen per breath than you get at sea level. If you’ve ever run or done any type of vigorous exercise within a short time after arriving at altitude, you probably recall what this effect feels like.
